From Classroom to Career: Sophie Brindley’s T Level Journey in Construction

It’s time to celebrate T Levels! This week, SDN will be sharing different perspectives on T Levels and the impact it’s having on students, employers and those delivery the course.

Recently, we caught up with Sophie Brindley – a recent graduate of the T Level in Construction (Design, Planning & Surveying) and proud T Level Ambassador.

“Hi! I’m Sophie Brindley, and as we celebrate T Level Week, I want to share my story and why choosing a T Level was one of the best decisions I’ve made. T Levels are a fantastic option for anyone passionate about getting straight into a career. I always knew I wanted to work in Construction, and after finishing secondary school, I was certain that sixth form wasn’t for me. I wanted to dive straight into something practical and career-focused – something that would help me start building my future right away.

That’s when I discovered T Levels and chose to study Construction: Design, Planning & Surveying. The best thing about T Levels is that they combine classroom learning with real-world experience. I loved that my studies didn’t just involve theory – I actually got to work in the industry and gain practical skills.

One of the biggest highlights of my T Level journey was the 45-day industry placement I completed with Gallagher Group. Spending that time on-site, and working alongside experienced professionals, taught me more than I ever could have learned in a classroom. I was able to shadow Site Managers, Engineers, and Quantity Surveyors, gaining real insight into how projects come together. I even had the chance to take on the responsibility of managing document control for a particular site, which really boosted my confidence.

There’s one day that I remember clearly. We were dealing with a materials delay, and I watched as the Site Manager calmly re-coordinated everyone’s tasks to keep things on track – it was problem-solving in action. It inspired me and gave me a clear picture of the role I want to grow into one day.

By the time I finished my T Level, I’d not only gained valuable experience but also secured a full-time role as a Trainee Assistant Site Manager at Gallagher. For me, the T Level wasn’t just a qualification: it was the start of my career and a chance to break into the construction industry. I never thought I’d have the opportunity so early in my career journey.

If you’re looking for a pathway that sets you up with skills, experience, and real connections, I can’t recommend T Levels enough. They’re perfect for anyone ready to step into their field and start making an impact. T Levels opened doors for me, and they can for you, too. This week, take a closer look – you might find that a T Level is exactly what you’re looking for.”
